The Lobos defeated Fresno State 7-2 on May 6 in the opening game of the 2026 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Softball Championship, advancing further in the tournament.

The win is significant as it marks UNM’s first victory in the Mountain West Championship since 2005. All seven runs scored by the Lobos came with two outs, raising their season total of two-out runs to 106.

Allie Williams began the scoring with a two-run home run in the third inning. Ella Dawson followed with a pinch-hit two-run home run in the fourth, and Jessica DeLeon added another two-run homer in the fifth. Jasmyn Lloyd contributed an RBI single to center field for UNM’s final run during the sixth inning. McKenna Guest pitched four and two-thirds innings, allowing two runs on four hits before Caitlin Benningfield earned her fifth save of the season by pitching a scoreless final stretch.

UNM collected ten hits during the game, led by Williams and Hayden Luderer with two each. Four hits went for extra bases, including a double from Estrella Rowe. The team’s defense produced key plays such as double plays and left several Fresno State runners stranded at critical moments.

After this win, UNM improves its record to 27-25 for the season and is set to face No. 1-seed GCU on Thursday.
