Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has secured federal emergency funding to bolster efforts against the Cotton Fire in Valencia County, New Mexico. The funds will be used to deploy additional firefighting crews, engines, and air support.

“New Mexican families are facing substantial challenges tonight, and we are mobilizing all available state resources to assist them,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. She expressed gratitude towards firefighters and first responders working under difficult conditions, adding that the new resources aim to enhance local firefighting capacity and safeguard communities.

The New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management will utilize the federal assistance to supplement local efforts with more firefighting personnel and equipment.

In response to ongoing wildfires and severe weather, the State Emergency Operations Center is coordinating with local emergency managers across New Mexico. A shelter for those evacuated due to the Cotton Fire has been established at the Daniel Fernandez Recreation Center in Los Lunas.
