Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared an emergency and secured Fire Management Assistance Grants (FMAG) to combat the Trout Fire in the Gila National Forest near Silver City. These measures aim to bolster firefighting efforts in Grant County.
Executive Order 2025-235 mandates the New Mexico Department of Finance Administration to allocate $750,000 to the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security & Emergency Management (DHSEM). This funding supports emergency response activities, including deploying the New Mexico National Guard.
The FMAG enables DHSEM to request additional resources such as firefighting crews, fire engines, air support, sheltering assistance, and personnel from federal or other entities. The program is designed for states, local and tribal governments to manage fires that pose a significant threat.
“New Mexicans are all too familiar with the devastation that comes from wildfires that bring danger and destruction to everything in their paths,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham. “I appreciate our federal partners for taking this threat seriously and for doing their part in supporting the responders who are working their hardest to protect the community.”
The State Emergency Operations Center is coordinating resource requests from local emergency managers. A shelter for evacuees has been established by Red Cross New Mexico at the Grant County Business & Conference Center in Silver City.
Information on resources for those affected by the fire can be accessed online, along with updates about its status at nmfireinfo.com.
