Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has named Matt Broom as interim chief of the New Mexico State Police, following the retirement of Chief Troy Weisler. Bryan Waller has also been promoted to interim deputy chief.

“New Mexico State Police is the backbone of public safety across this state — in our cities, our rural communities, and everywhere in between,” said Governor Lujan Grisham. “Matt Broom brings 24 years of experience and tested leadership to this role, and Bryan Waller is a decorated officer who has served New Mexicans with courage and integrity at every rank. I have confidence they will both serve New Mexicans well.”

Broom began his career with the New Mexico State Police in 2001 as a patrolman in Artesia. Over his 24-year tenure, he has worked in both the Uniform and Investigations Bureaus, managing investigations into major narcotics cases, crimes against children, and other significant incidents. He was promoted to major in 2019 and deputy chief in 2021. Broom holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of the Southwest and completed training at Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command.

Waller is a 17-year law enforcement veteran with experience spanning patrol duties, special operations, internal affairs, and command roles. His commendations include a Medal of Valor for actions during a hostage situation in 2011, a Courage in the Line of Duty Award for rescuing a juvenile hostage in 2013, and a Life Saving Award for assisting a pregnant woman during an emergency near Clines Corners in 2020. He became captain in 2023 and earned his degree from UNM’s Anderson School of Management.

The appointments were facilitated by the New Mexico State Executive branch as part of its ongoing efforts to engage with the public through appointment applications and requests for assistance or records (official website). The executive office operates out of Room 400 on the fourth floor of the New Mexico State Capitol at 490 Old Santa Fe Trail in Santa Fe (official website).

Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham leads the executive branch alongside Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales (official website). The administration prioritizes education initiatives, economic advancement strategies, community sustainability projects (official website), promotion of public service careers (official website), all focused on serving residents throughout New Mexico (official website).
