A Bosque Farms man pleaded guilty on Apr. 14 in federal court to illegally possessing a firearm after having previous felony and misdemeanor convictions for domestic violence.

The case is significant because it highlights the enforcement of laws that prohibit individuals with certain criminal backgrounds from owning firearms or ammunition. Such measures are intended to enhance public safety by preventing access to weapons by those deemed legally ineligible.

According to court documents, Warren Chewiwi, age 52, was found on July 15, 2024, in possession of a 12-gauge shotgun and shotgun shells. Because of his prior convictions for both felony offenses and misdemeanor crimes related to domestic violence, Chewiwi was not allowed by law to have firearms or ammunition.

Chewiwi admitted guilt to the charge of being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. He could face up to fifteen years in prison at sentencing as well as up to three years of supervised release following any prison term. In addition, he will be required to surrender the shotgun and ammunition involved in the offense.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison announced the plea agreement. The Isleta Pueblo Police Department investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorney Zachary C. Jones is handling prosecution duties.

The outcome underscores ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies and prosecutors to address gun possession violations involving individuals with criminal records.
