The Bernalillo County Commission approved on April 14 a financial resolution to allocate $184,818 for the completion of Phase 3 improvements at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park in the South Valley.

This decision fills a funding gap and brings the total available budget for park upgrades to nearly $720,000. The move aims to enhance community amenities and support ongoing public events at the site.

Vice-Chair Frank Baca said, “The Dolores Huerta Gateway Park has become a jewel in the South Valley. The site has become home of the weekly Friday night South Valley Market events which includes a farmers market, arts and crafts, food and live entertainment.” He also noted that county staff have worked with South Valley Main Street and local residents to identify needed amenities.

Phase 3 will focus on converting an existing drainage pond area into a blue grass turf playing field that can also serve as seating during performances in warmer months. Additional planned improvements include drainage upgrades, more shade trees, fencing or screening around functional drainage areas, and increased lighting for evening events. Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2026 with completion expected by mid-2027.

In related news affecting Bernalillo County’s justice system, the District Attorney has expressed frustration over suspects being released without GPS monitors when they are supposed to have them. One recent case involved Jawid Yaqubi, who was accused of aggravated assault but was released by a judge despite objections from prosecutors seeking his detention until trial.

The weekly South Valley Market events at Dolores Huerta Gateway Park are set to run from June 12 through October 16 this year, except on July 3.
