The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department announced on April 14 that it will offer 100 spay and neuter surgery reservations for cats to Albuquerque residents on Wednesday, April 15. Residents must make an appointment to access this service, which is limited to four cats per household, with each cat weighing at least three pounds. A $10 surcharge per cat is required at the time of surgery.

Springtime, often called “kitten season,” brings a significant increase in unwanted litters at animal shelters. The department said it hopes these services will help residents prevent unwanted feline pregnancies as warmer weather approaches.

Appointments open at 10 a.m. on April 15 and will continue until all slots are filled. Proof of residency in Albuquerque is required to participate in the program.

The City of Albuquerque has long served as a cultural landmark through venues such as the KiMo Theatre, which has fostered community gatherings and artistic expression over decades, according to the theater’s history page. The city also maintains historic sites like the KiMo Theatre—a venue known for its Pueblo Deco architecture—highlighting its commitment to both culture and public service as detailed on its official history page.

Albuquerque’s government focuses on establishing goals, approving budgets, and preserving a merit system through council duties described on its official website. The council operates under a structure where members elect leadership annually to guide meetings, according to the official council history.

The city’s influence extends across nine geographic districts shaped by historical developments such as the railroad era, according to the city’s timeline. These ongoing initiatives reflect how local government programs address both immediate community needs—such as animal welfare—and broader civic priorities.
