ABQ RIDE is seeking volunteers for its fifth annual Community Bus Stop Cleanup, according to a May 27 announcement. The event aims to improve bus stops along Central Avenue from Girard to Wyoming by encouraging community members to participate in cleaning efforts.

The cleanup highlights ABQ RIDE’s Adopt-A-Stop volunteer program, which currently has 108 volunteers maintaining 172 stops and stations throughout Albuquerque. “Our transit system serves thousands of folks,” said Mayor Tim Keller, “Let’s keep our bus stops nice for them and everyone across Albuquerque.”

ABQ RIDE is hoping that at least 50 volunteers will join the effort. Participants are scheduled to meet at the Uptown Transit Center at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, with advance registration encouraged. Volunteers will be transported between bus stops to pick up trash until noon before returning for refreshments. Water bottles and cleaning equipment will be provided.

“With more than 2,700 bus stops around Albuquerque, Adopt-A-Stop volunteers play a critical role in keeping them safe and clean for everyone,” said Transit Director Leslie Keener. “We want the entire community to be proud of our transit system and for riders to have a pleasant travel experience.” Last year’s cleanup resulted in the collection of 2,000 pounds of trash safely disposed of by the City’s Solid Waste Department.

Solid Waste Management Director Billy Gallegos said, “Our city is great at coming together for events like this. We’re creating a better Albuquerque together.” Volunteer Joshua Bukendorf shared his experience adopting two bus stops near Joy Junction where he also volunteers: “We need to recognize our transit system’s importance,” said Bukendorf. “Since the bus is a great city resource and integral for Joy Junction, I want to show appreciation for that route. I encourage others to consider adopting bus stops. Cleanliness is good for everyone.”

Volunteer Coordinator Dwayne Baker said he appreciates the commitment shown by those involved with Adopt-A-Stop: “Adopt-A-Stop is a wonderful opportunity because there’s immediate gratification for your work,” said Baker. “Plus, when volunteers are out cleaning their stops, it inspires others. People drive by and thank our volunteers for what they’re doing.”

Free parking will be available at Uptown Transit Center, or participants can use free public transportation on Routes 8, 157, and 766. More information about this event as well as other volunteer opportunities can be found through ABQ RIDE resources.
